Web-to-print

This is more a question that I've noticed from my production department.
These days often our work, especially ones that have a tight deadline, are going to printers that offer "web-to-print" services.
As more and more print work are becoming lower in volume and used for more personal communications.
I'm wondering why is it not a standard in the industry yet considering the demand?

We have a national In-house printing department. Generally we use it to print internal communications and other non-branding related materials. But recently i was made aware that our In-house printing department got a new digital printer and the result looks great. Now i'm thinking of printing some low volume targeted communications material In-house. What would stop me from doing so? Considering quality, cost and speed?

I want to make very special business card with egde painting ... Somebody told me, the is could be possible with an Airbrush ... Put I don´t know wich type of colour to take, so that the paper won´t get stuck and I´m not sure, wich paper I can use (is it possilble to use uncoated?)
Does sombody have expirience with this, who could give mi a few tips?

I've been looking for ways to offer more value to my customers with interesting online activities. But i want to link that to my print communications. QR Codes have been suggested. But it's not the most appealing. What other cross media techniques are there to help strengthen my print communications that people are used to receiving?
